part of the Chesapeake Bay watershedAmerica's
largest and most productive estuary. The
Chesapeake Bay watershed covers an area of 64,000 square
miles.
The
watershed includes parts of six statesMaryland,
West Virginia, Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New
Yorkand the entire District of
Columbia.
The
Bay is the heart of the watershed, and the thousands of
miles of streams, rivers and wetlands are its circulatory
system. Thousands of plant and animal species and more
than 15 million people live within the Chesapeake Bay
watershed. The human population in the watershed has significantly
affected the Watershed's habitats, water quality and resources.
